Special Olympics World Winter Games Austria 2017

The world’s largest sports and humanitarian event in 2017 was the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Graz, Schladming and Ramsau, Austria. The games ran from March 14 to 25.  Austria was host to 2,700 Special Olympics athletes from 105 nations to compete in nine Olympic-type winter sports. 

Southsiders’ own Joy MacLeod had the honor to represented Special Olympics Colorado as a member of Team USA.  Joy has been involved in Special Olympics for over 30 years and has participated in many sports including:  figure skating, basketball, softball, cycling, track & field, gymnastics, bocce, speed skating, and snowshoeing.   

Joy participated in three Snowshoeing events in Austria and brought home a gold medal in the 800M race; a silver medal in the 4 x 400M Relay race; and a 4th place ribbon in the 400M race.
